Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Led Motion on a Matter of Urgent National Importance with Regards to the Continuous Importation of Hazardous Petroleum Products into The Country.

On Wednesday the 3rd of July, on the floor of the Senate,, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong led the debate on a matter of urgent National importance with regards to the continuous importation of hazardous petroleum products into the country.
He intimated the Senate with a recent example of foreign diesel carriers dumping hazardous diesel products on the West African market, with Nigeria being the primary target. This dumping of products below the fair market value is in direct contradiction of the rules of trade as provided by the World Trade Organisation.
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong also queried the logic behind the continuous issuance of import licenses when it has been clearly demonstrated that local operators have the requisite capacity, and are willing, to meet the internal petroleum consumption demands of the country.
In the prayers of the motion, which were unanimously adopted by the Senate, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong urged the investigation of all regulators and operators in the petroleum sector to unearth and discontinue, if any, all acts of sabotage that could result in the stifling of the growth of the petroleum sector in particular, as well as the broader economy. This is to be achieved with the special committee of the Senate working hand in hand with both private and governmental stakeholders.
